autumn takes us from the sidelines as it lifts us from the dawn
and we wear the views of others to where few of us have gone
all the colors ... all the cheering somehow brings us all alive
from the pain of this existence from the darkness where we dive
i've no moments i've invested in these teams i still cheer on
watch in silence as they beckon from the years that have passed on
put the sunlight in the autumn lift us all to better days
as the leaves all fall to winter leaving shadows on the way
and i glance outside my window at the colors in the trees
and i gasp up in my longing pulling breath up from my knees
god is waiting with his mercy and the colors neath the sky
gone too blue we can't imagine please don't let the years pass by
catching leaves with all my children as the trees would let them fall
looking up into the sunshine as the whispering breeze would call
taken back into my childhood with the singing of the wind
and the god who sings eternal gives us life to live again
how he lifts us when we're broken - how he pulls us from the fray
and somehow he's cheering sidelines holding markers on the way
as the first down counts in inches and as franco runs again
each reception takes us backwards in the game we always win
as the clock runs ever forward - as the fields somehow rewind
every moment in the future - every second left behind
God sets fields aside in motion even teams i will not cheer
but i still am drawn into him for i know that he is here
and he's catching leaves beside us when the autumn winds begin
he is laughing there as we are - he's the God who steps within
missing catches seemed so certain see the glow upon his face
and my own reflects this other just a glimpse of all his grace
how he lifts us when we're broken - how he pulls us from the fray
and somehow he's cheering sidelines holding markers on the way
as the first down counts in inches and as franco runs again
each reception takes us backwards in the game we always win
